Fairfield Freshman School
Fairfield, Ohio
Fairfield City Schools tasked the design team with delivering a new Freshman School that has a progressive learning environment centered on personalized learning in both group and individual settings for 850 freshman students.
Meeting these needs, the common area collects the public assembly zones—dining, athletics, performing arts, and an open media center—while anchoring the central spline of the building. The east end of the commons contains a learning stair that has proven extremely popular not only for formal presentations, but also for informal meetings between periods, a seating option for lunch, and a place to plug in at an intermission.
A sense of history was important to the district; the design integrated as many historical artifacts as possible. The most dynamic is a wall sculpture created out of 300 bent plywood seat-backs from the now demolished original freshman building.
