Fair Street Elementary School
Gainesville, Georgia
RLR worked with the Gainesville City School System to design a new elementary campus that would serve the needs of its growing student body. Because the replacement school also would serve as a community center, RLR gathered community input on the key functions and spaces that would be used after hours and on weekends.
The Fair Street Elementary School project called for demolishing the existing historic, 75-year-old facility. The new campus was designed with a two-story classroom wing that houses 45 classrooms, a kitchen, a media center, a gymnasium, a historical society classroom and an outdoor amphitheater.
The existing site is extremely limited in acreage and includes a complex terrain. Addressing these variables required the collaborative efforts of the school system and RLR’s civil and architectural planners.
The school’s integrated design is tailored to the community’s needs and the existing site’s challenges. Fair Street received EPAct Certification based upon the energy savings that RLR incorporated into the building design.
