Fair Lawn High School
Fair Lawn, New Jersey
The architect worked with the school board to develop long-range plans, educational specifications, conceptual designs and cost estimates for the Fair Lawn High School project. The firm also provided assistance to obtain state funding and education department approvals, and assisted with the referendum process.
The scope of work for the 48,000-square-foot addition included 13 new standard classrooms, six new science rooms, a new media center/computer lab, a new band room and an expanded cafeteria. The two-story addition completed corridor circulation between two existing wings of the school. Part of the design incorporated a new, clearly visible main entrance from the rear parking lot, as well as a secondary entrance to the gymnasium adjacent to the athletic fields.
The new cafeteria was designed with natural light in mind. The design also ties the cafeteria into outdoor courtyard seating formed by the new addition. The brick on the new structure blends with the original building, and the beige metal panels were designed to fit with a later addition on the other side of the school. The burgundy standing-seam metal roof wraps the perimeter of the new addition to disguise the HVAC units.
The project scope also included about 50,000 square feet of renovations to the existing main office, science wing, guidance offices, child-study team offices, weightroom, wrestling room and classrooms.
