Evergreen Park Community High School, Learning Resource Center Renovation
Evergreen Park, Illinois
Evergreen Park Community High School’s 2nd Floor Learning Resource Center, which serves a student body of more than 800 students, was constructed in 1971 and had not been updated. Constructed with a steel frame and interior steel columns, it was a large open space with inefficient utilization. The upgrade aimed to create space for students to collaborate, socialize, and study. New soft seating can be rearranged for group learning. High-top tables were outfitted with charging stations to maintain one-to-one devices. The circulation desk was positioned to provide library staff with better sightlines.
Group collaborative spaces—three small and one large—were created; glass partition walls surround them. Each space contains LED monitors connected to a media table where students can connect their devices and work collaboratively. Three existing computer lab classrooms have been relocated to the resource center to free up classroom space within the building. A fourth lab was created as a maker space. A large professional development space is equipped with a retractable projection screen and sound system for staff meetings, school testing, and other school and community functions.
Dimmable LED lighting was installed throughout the space, along with a Lutron daylight harvesting system. The same Lutron system is used elsewhere in the building and is coordinated together. An energy-efficient air handler and boilers were installed to replace an electric preheat system.
Wood-look stone panel systems were used throughout the space to add warmth. Large windows were added to match the appearance of the existing curtainwall to provide access during construction for delivery and removal of construction materials. Cloud ceilings were added in the higher 12-foot ceiling areas to help overall acoustics. Because of the use of gypsum board construction, corner guards were used as design elements.
