Emmanuel College, Cardinal Cushing Library Lecture Hall Renovation

Built in 1963, the Cardinal Cushing Library Lecture Hall has served the Emmanuel College campus and surrounding colleges for more than 30 years. Since its construction, teaching technologies and standards have grown more sophisticated. The college sought to redesign the hall.
The architect conducted field surveys of the existing hall and developed a strategy for upgrading the room to address accessibility, finishes, seating, lighting, acoustics, audiovisual, and mechanical and life-safety systems. To help control reverberation within the hall, acoustical panels were added to the walls, and new carpeting and new upholstered seating were installed. Ceiling speakers also were situated throughout the new ceiling. A control booth and podium were designed to allow lecturers a wide range of technological options for presenting material to audiences.
A new rooftop mechanical unit was added above the stage of the lecture hall to provide code-compliant heating and cooling for the space. Installation of the unit and the routing of the mechanical ducts ensure isolation of all mechanical noise. The boiler room ceiling below the lecture hall also was acoustically treated to reduce noise.
