Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Dining Commons

Embry-Riddle’s enrollment for 2008 was projected to be a little more than 1,500 students, including 30 graduate students. The campus is a mixture of existing buildings from the original Prescott College and modern additions and renovations by Embry-Riddle. Despite its size, it’s a residential campus. With enrollment numbers increasing at institutions statewide, the campus has been charged with meeting the needs of expanding program numbers and accompanying campus amenities.
The architect was commissioned to design ERAU’s new dining commons. The facility is central to the campus residential buildings. The design team created a modern, multi-use dining commons with multiple servery lines of fast-food varieties, as well as standard hot/cold lines with deli and salad bar options. Students in this temperate climate enjoy the option of a spacious dining area inside or enjoying their meal outside in the courtyard.
This 17,500-square-foot dining facility is situated strategically at the base of a hillside, which slopes toward the main campus. Constructed of materials used in other buildings on campus, the building’s exterior presents a collage of color, yet provides continuity to celebrate the building’s function as a student gathering area.
The dining area is designed to accommodate 220 seats. It has two servery islands in the dining area and a primary server line adjacent to the main kitchen. Openings are situated to provide natural light and buffer direct sunlight. Students also can take advantage of wireless Internet access. Another highlight of this facility is its multipurpose functionality, allowing the dining area to be divided for meetings or campus events.
