Eastern Guilford High School
Gibsonville, North Carolina
The Eastern Guilford High School project included demolition of a 1950s building that had been destroyed by fire, and construction of a temporary “mobile village” where students could attend class while a new facility was being constructed.
The new 1,200-student/1,600-core capacity building is organized around a central two-story atrium. Opening directly into the atrium are the cafeteria, auditorium, main entry lobby, gymnasium, concessions space, student store and science laboratories. Incorporated into the atrium commons are a career center, a cyber cafe and additional dining space.
Easy internal access to all areas of the facility permits all of the exterior doors to be locked with the exception of the main entrance, where control doors and a visitor check-in lobby are situated.
The architect designed and constructed the new facility in less than 670 days. Because of the rapid response, the “mobile village” was ready for students at the beginning of the next school year. Student displacement from a permanent facility was limited to a little more than two years.
