East Wake Academy Middle School
Zebulon, North Carolina
Design team: Jim Sherrer Jr. AIA (Principal In Charge), Jonathan Medlin AIA LEED AP (Project Architect), Trevor Cundiff (REVIT Modeler), Fluhrer-Reed (Structural Engineers), Crenshaw Consulting Engineers Inc. (MEP Engineers)
This marks the second most significant expansion for the overall campus master plan design. East Wake Academy Middle School supports grades 5 to 8 and shares its location with its big brother, East Wake Academy High School, which was completed in 2011. This state-of-the-art facility was designed to upgrade the middle school experience and serve the ever-growing community in Zebulon, North Carolina.
The concept is a simple double-loaded corridor scheme anchored with a two-story student commons and outdoor space situated along the long axis of the campus. The commons are light, open and active. The outdoor space functions as the middle school marker along the campus axis, and also functions as the stage for the campus amphitheater.
The building is situated to maximize daylighting; each classroom has either north- or south-facing glass. Expansive glass in the commons faces north for light and energy efficiency. Exterior materials are low-maintenance, sustainable and within the palette of the campus. Interior finishes are economical yet sustainable and create an atmosphere that inspires and encourages.
