Looking to expand its programs, East Texas Baptist University (EBTU) found a new home for the ETBU School of Nursing at the historic Marshall Grand after the former hotel building stood in a profoundly blighted condition for more than 40 years. Jerry Cargill and his wife, Judy Cargill, along with former Texas State Senator and former Harrison County Judge Richard Anderson and his wife, Christina Anderson, donated the 1929 building to the university in 2013. ETBU raised more than $3 million to renovate five out of eight floors of the Grand, formerly known as the Hotel Marshall.

With significant contributions from many organizations across Texas, ETBU bought training equipment for the nursing laboratories—mannequins, headboards, hospital and medical treatment beds, gurneys, cameras, and computer simulation technology. Through a collaborative effort, the university transformed the historic hotel into a modern space for excellence in healthcare education.
