East Harlem Education Center
New York, New York
The East Harlem Education Center houses the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) and East Harlem Scholars Academies. The building is a new six-story educational center serving more than 1,000 children from East Harlem and surrounding communities. It is the flagship for EHTP and its affiliated programs as well as a purpose-built home for two of its charter schools.
The building has been designed to celebrate the long history of the organization, which began in 1958 as a reading program operating from a Harlem living room. The new facility amalgamated four lots, one of which was the site of a tenement that housed the tutoring program for many years. It was painted blue to distinguish it from its residential neighbors, and was affectionately known as “the blue building.”
The new facility pays tribute to its predecessor, and is a “beacon of blue” on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 105th Street. With southern and western exposure, the blue metal panel portion of the building houses the majority of the specialized program spaces, such as the high school commons, the robotics laboratory, the library, the art room and the science laboratory.
