Eagle Hill School, Ronald M. Baglio Sports and Fitness Center
Hardwick, Massachusetts
Over the past dozen years the Eagle Hill School has added 10 new buildings including student housing, classroom buildings, wastewater treatment, a cultural center and, in July 2013, the capstone — the Ronald M. Baglio Sports & Fitness Center. The center replaces an outdated gym and fitness center and includes a natatorium, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a walking/jogging track, a multipurpose room, squash courts and a climbing wall in a tower just off the three-court competition/recreational gymnasium.
The Sports & Fitness Center occupies a prominent place at the top of a hill overlooking the campus. The hill is used to partially hide the mass of the large-volume gym and natatorium. One advantage enjoyed by the design team was ample land, which enabled the team to create a single-story building that saved greatly on construction costs and made student supervision easier. This modern design adds dynamism to the large punched openings in the clapboard exterior, and the generous windows below help unify the aesthetic and keep the natatorium, gymnasium and fitness areas in full view of arriving community members.
