Duxbury Co-Located Middle/High School
Duxbury, Massachusetts
The new Middle/High School is composed of four distinct parts: Middle School Wing, High School Wing, Community Wing and the Concourse, which provides the armature upon which all other parts are arranged. Students and staff are encouraged to collaborate in open seating areas along the Concourse, while re-fueling on foods prepared by culinary arts students in adjacent labs.
The Concourse runs parallel to the local barrier beach, which is a strong element of the town’s identity. Celebrating it in an artistic and informative interpretation in the form of a map respecting its natural orientation through a custom terrazzo floor was a unique opportunity. On the Community Wing side of the Concourse, deep greens in the floor pattern represent the shallower waters of the “bay area” as well as Duxbury’s culture, history and tradition, protected by a safe harbor. On the Middle School and High School Wing side of the Concourse, dark blues in the floor pattern represent the deep waters of the “ocean area” as well as exploration, adventure and the unknown.
