Duke University, Fuqua School of Business, Fox Student Center Addition
Durham, North Carolina
The dining hall/student center addition to the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University provides dining room seating for 250 and creates a new “living room” for the campus. The space is used for student lounging and gathering before and after formal events in adjacent spaces. The dining room encloses a winter garden, which functions as a year-round gathering space. It also provides reception space for visiting lecture events and special-event programs. At the center of the winter garden, an open staircase connects to a lower level that houses doctoral-studies offices and student lockers.
The winter garden ceiling and roof are composed of a series of skylights connected by a framework of beams that contain all of the utility services for HVAC and lighting. The space connects to the dining room through wood casework dividers that create a sense of division, but leave views open.
To the west of the dining hall is a cafe and full-service kitchen. A dining terrace is to the east of the dining hall. In the dining room, a custom curtainwall design was detailed with integral shading elements, which, together with integrated sunshades, allow for maximum glass exposure on the addition’s south face. The existing views into the forest were considered crucial at the outset of the design process, and the views were expressly maintained.
