The wooded, hilly terrain, streams, ponds and open vistas make the Doane College campus a memorable experience.
The new Lied Science, Mathematics and Computer Science Facility was constructed in an open area within a heavily wooded ravine. The building brings together the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics and computer science, all part of the natural-sciences division but currently scattered across campus.
The building layout is a result of the following needs: Faculty offices need to be close to laboratories and classrooms; natural light needs to be available for all spaces; visual connection from inside out; the building should respond to and become one with the site; the orientation, layout and design must be compatible with the campus master plan; informal spaces throughout the facility need to foster spontaneous student/faculty interaction.
Functional needs led to an L-shaped building connected at the ends of each leg of the L. The laboratory and office spaces occupy the L, and shared and interactive spaces inhabit the connecting link.
