Dixie State College was given the opportunity to develop a new health-sciences building on land that was donated by Intermountain Health Care on a parcel adjacent to its Dixie Regional Medical Center. Dixie State College will enjoy a close collaborative working relationship with the hospital because of its proximity and complementary programs.
This three-story, mixed-use facility will contain several departments for the health sciences, including administration, nursing, medical radiology, respiratory therapy, dental sciences, surgical technology and physical therapy. It also will contain academic shared space; a 150-person lecture hall; 60-person lecture hall; and student lounges. The entry lobby, which is open to the second level, and a student lounge area with an attached communicating stair serve to link all three levels vertically. The stair and lobby elements serve as a beacon and gain spectacular views to the south and west. The facility also will be used for conferences, seminars and lectures.
The integration of usable outdoor space into the facility was critical because the St. George climate will facilitate its use. A winter/entry courtyard to the sunny south and a summer courtyard on the shaded north have been added to the design to offer a variety of student gathering spaces within the site.
