Discovery Cube Orange County, Renovation and Expansion
Orange County, California
Discovery Cube Orange County initiates imagination and fosters wonder in children for how the world works. The campus offers hands-on permanent exhibits, themes, science adventures, interactive programs, shows and STEM learning spaces, with a focus on development and appreciation for micro-ecosystems on Earth and exploration of the larger universe.
The expansion includes a 10,000-square-foot, 500-seat black box theater convertible to a major exhibit space by means of telescoping seating. The theatrical lighting, sound and projection systems are all supported by or positioned on a checkerboard patterned tension grid.
The theater and stage also will be used for scientific demonstrations, 2D/3D film presentations, lectures and yet-to-be-determined science-related entertainment.
The stage is portable so that when the seating is retracted and the stage is removed, an exhibit hall of 8,600 square feet can mount large exhibits.
Attendance at the educational discovery science center has increased dramatically since its opening.
