This project involved renovation, historic restoration, a new building, as well as numerous site improvements for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation. Dilworth Elementary School was conceived as not only a school, but also a community center for the neighborhood and surrounding area. Many stakeholders were involved throughout the process, including the Dilworth Neighborhood Association, Charlotte Junior Soccer League, Dilworth Tennis Club, the Historic District Commission, and staff and parents. They met in large and small groups to hear all perspectives and presented many designs until they reached a solution that best served all.
The building is a pure reflection of the complex and diverse community it serves, and its design celebrates the unique qualities of a performing-arts magnet school.
