Delaware County Community College, Learning Commons
Media, Pennsylvania
No longer just a place to house books, the Delaware County Community College’s library has been transformed into a learning commons that unifies multiple functions under one roof. What was a traditional facility has become a modern, welcoming learning destination to meet the needs of the 21st-century student.
The use of floating ceilings and bold colors helped offset the Brutalist 1970s concrete waffle slab structure. Vivid red carpet tiles lead students from the front door to the centrally situated information desk with a prominent circular red resin sign and skylight above.
The reduction in book stacks opened up spaces that promote team collaboration, tutoring and individual quiet study. Along the perimeter, 16 transparent glass-walled group study rooms offer engaging learning environments and allow natural light to penetrate into the center of the space.
The building’s new café provides a welcome break in between classes or studying, enabling people to socialize and grab a coffee or a small bite to eat.
