DCMO BOCES has two campuses, Harrold and Chenango. Each campus offers vocational programs, general and special education to K-12 students. Additions and renovations have provided each campus with more classrooms, updated vocational spaces, and new gymnasiums and cafeterias.
The Harrold Campus is situated on a hillside with a commanding view of the surrounding mountains. There are two original structures: one contains vocational labs, and another houses classrooms and office spaces. The buildings are separated by 350 feet horizontally and 30 feet vertically.
The design of the addition at Harrold Campus is a response to the challenges of a steeply sloping, geographically influential site and the programmatic requirement that an addition connect two existing buildings. Brick and precast panel-clad “bars” contain classrooms and vocational spaces. The gymnasium and cafeteria are sculptural elements serving as the core between the bars, and are clad in gold and green metal panels. The cafeteria uses large amounts of glazing to take advantage of the surrounding mountainside views.
The Chenango Campus consists of a one-story building that sits at the midpoint of a sloping site. The design included a renovation of the original building and two additions, one to the north end containing the gymnasium and cafeteria, and a two-story addition to the south. This addition is a two-story, double-loaded classroom wing that faces the street and presents an updated appearance, yet maintains a tie to the original building. Because of the sloping site, the upper level adjoins the main level of the existing building, and the lower level sits downhill.
The existing entrance was a non-descript alcove at the front of the building. The site was reconfigured to integrate the new and existing components, creating a more prominent main arrival point.
