DeLalio Elementary School
Jacksonville, North Carolina
Serving as a prototype for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in its pursuit of 21st-century learning schools, DeLalio Elementary School in Jacksonville, N.C., breaks the mold of the traditional classroom.
Oculus Inc. and Woolpert worked with the DoDEA to design a school environment that is LEED-certified and geared toward engaging children in pre-K through 5th grade.
Emphasis was placed on creating an interior design and finish palette that incorporates nature and wildlife imagery. Blues, greens and browns with vivid accent colors permeate the interior and help define the four separate learning hubs: arctic, deserts, forests and oceans. The school’s mascot, a dolphin, is integrated throughout the space.
Elaborate signage and wayfinding help explain each of the learning hubs in an informative way. From facts and stats on recycling components to exposed duct and piping work in the corridors, the interior design provides a decorative element that encourages STEM involvement. Earth duct and floor slab cooling, low-VOC materials and finishes, and recycled materials meet requirements for LEED Silver certification.
