Deerfield School District 109, Learning Commons
Deerfield, Illinois
The libraries in Deerfield School District 109 have been transformed into 21st-century Learning Commons: places that encourage participatory learning and provide students and staff the proper tools and environment. Students no longer need a library to serve as an archive of information. Instead they require a place that encourages collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.
The project involved three schools: Caruso Middle School (1), Shepard Middle School (2), and South Park Elementary School (3).
The Learning Commons offer a variety of seating and gathering areas with furniture that is movable to enable small or large grouping. These spaces are designed to support existing and future technology. Each Learning Commons has been given a makerspace area for students to engage in a wide range of activities that are critical to the design, making and exploration process. The introduction of new collaborative furniture, lighting and an infusion of color has given these learning environments an added spark of excitement.
