Davis Catalyst Center
Kaysville, Utah
The Catalyst Center is a new magnet school for 11th and 12th graders in the Davis School District. This facility offers high-level specialty career and technical courses, designed with industry partners. It provides students an opportunity to work on real-world projects. For Phase One of the project, the district purchased a two-story office building and remodeled it to house eight innovative programs: audio/video (A/V) production, unmanned aircraft, culinary arts (including a student-operated café and catering), cybersecurity, game design, entrepreneurship, medical assisting, and pharmaceutical assisting.
The premise for the design was to create the most realistic simulation of the professional workplace for each discipline. For example, the design team discovered that the A/V industry no longer uses a green screen for filming; instead, an LED screen is used to create realistic settings for production. This project includes a curved 10-foot-by-20-foot LED array in the studio. The medical exam rooms are replicas of those designed for the local medical industry, and the retail and hospital pharmacies replicate reality.
