This building was designed to achieve a dual vision: provide a wellness experience and create a culture of interdisciplinarity. Davidson County Community College’s ultimate goal was to consolidate all its health programs, which were spread out across the campus, in one state-of-the-art facility. The college’s vision was to support interdisciplinarity across departments, provide spaces that encourage campus life, and support a philosophy that learning happens everywhere.

Given its prominent location adjacent to a mature forest, the facility was designed to encourage wellness. Daylight strategies and transparency give the facility a warm, open and bright atmosphere. Students and faculty are connected to nature through expanses of exterior and interior glass that make learning visible.

The exterior of the building was designed to fit the context of the campus in terms of scale, style, and materiality through brick, glass and zinc. A playful arrangement of the exterior metal panels mimics the cellular structures of the human body as seen under a microscope.
