Crozier Middle School (Work in Progress)
Inglewood, California
Crozier Middle School is on a flat urban site adjacent to the Inglewood Civic Center. The site has been home to a public school facility since the founding of the first Inglewood School. The aging facilities are being replaced in phases, resulting in a new campus with a modernized 500-seat theater to remain.
The new school is designed for 1,400 students in grades 6 to 8. The academic curriculum supports a magnet program in math/science and the performing arts. Joint-use agreements are proposed for the theater and for the in-town playfields and basketball courts.
The design recognizes the need for a high-density, two-story response that is safe and secure. Exterior building materials have been selected for durability and sustainability, while balancing a human-scale aesthetic among the surrounding civic buildings. The building design respects the scale of the surrounding civic center buildings while reflecting the creativity and self-determination of the young students. District staff, campus faculty and parents actively participated in the design process.
