Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Chapel of the Sacred Heart

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s Chapel of the Sacred Heart, a landmark in Chicago’s Pilsen community, stood in disrepair—and was virtually unusable—for years before this renovation. Now, this 1904 structure once again lifts the spirits of students, faculty and neighbors alike.

A tribute to the students’ Hispanic background, the aesthetic draws upon the iconography of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego. The color palette boasts vibrant hues common to the culture, and newly commissioned stained-glass windows portray influential individuals in the Jesuit Order and school community.

By removing the heavy balcony addition, the renovation accentuates hidden architectural features. The visually disruptive pendant fixtures have been replaced by dramatic, concealed lighting, and soft arches majestically frame lateral views. The previously lackluster altar has been transformed into a brilliant focal point, featuring a grand retablo with devotional paintings depicting pivotal moments of the gospel.

The architect also designed a complementary glass-walled "link" structure to highlight the main entry, improve access between the school and chapel, and define a secluded courtyard space beyond.
