Crestview Elementary School
Merriam, Kansas
The Shawnee Mission School District was experiencing a rejuvenation within the neighborhood surrounding Crestview Elementary. Neighborhood schools are a hallmark of this district, and it was determined the 60-year-old elementary school no longer fulfilled its mission, so the planning began for a replacement facility.
The main priorities and design goals:
• A design complementary to the neighborhood
• Opportunities for continuous learning and community collaboration
• Flexibility that accommodates multiple teaching and learning styles
• Subtle safety and security through openness and transparency
The one-story, pitched roof design reflects the neighborhood’s 1950s single-story ranch style homes. Care was taken to ensure the materials selected were sustainable and durable. The exterior palette includes earth tones and natural finishes to blend into the neighborhood.
The interior design layout affords the administration a complete view of the school from a central location, and provides students with a welcoming and safe place to learn. Opportunities for continuous learning and collaboration that allow for multiple teaching and learning styles were achieved using breakout spaces and flex classrooms in each educational corridor. Other corridors include spaces for arts education, a media center, maker spaces, a gymnasium/safe room, a cafeteria, and music rooms.
Splashes of bright colors assist with wayfinding and help separate grade levels. Natural materials, bright colors, and soft seating, along with movable tables and chairs are situated throughout the corridors to provide additional collaboration and learning opportunities. The subdued color palette in classrooms provides teachers the opportunity to customize the atmosphere for their students.
Various types of seating enable students to select what makes them comfortable. The seating supports specific learning styles while accommodating students’ developmental need to move and shift positions. Classroom flexibility enables teachers to quickly reconfigure the room to accommodate different activities.
