Creston Elementary/Creston Middle School and School/Community Activities Facilities
Creston, Iowa
This innovative “bowtie” plan provides separate elementary and middle school teaching areas, and shared school/community activities, resource and specialized teaching areas—each with its own entrance, identity and social-development areas.
Leading-edge educational design emphasizes convenient flexibility of curriculum delivery, sharing resources, hands-on exploratory learning labs, specialized project study, and small-group and individual learning environments. Separate areas for grades 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 have innovative, internally flexible elements for team-teaching for each student’s needs.
Spacious, colorful learning environments and multifunctional activities areas support a variety of programs from elementary to adult needs, before, during and after school.
Technologies for education are complemented by managed operating costs, including energy savings via geothermal heating and cooling.
Economic challenges were mastered by the district’s chosen project-development decision to optimize its investment via independent educational facilities and cost-management consultants (rather than using a traditional architect or construction manager). Credibility led to overwhelming community support of long-range tax-management and facilities plans. The team produced durable, class A facilities for nearly 20 percent less cost than comparable projects bid at the same time in this area.
