Creighton School District was looking to modernize the entire campus to create the ideal environment for adventurous thinkers, kind-hearted leaders, and collaborative learners. Incorporating the vision of the community remained paramount when deciding how to design the new space. Creighton wanted to expand on the shifting paradigms of the Academy, adopting multi-age, dual-language and constructivism curriculums. There needed to be communal spaces that could envelop all the ideals of the district in tandem with the needs of the community. The designers envisioned a school that would elevate students from a traditional learning experience to one filled daily with adventure and exploration. Inspired by the multifaceted nature of a canyon, each area reflects a different component of nature. Featured common areas include “The Butte,” a communications staircase that ignites collaboration; “The Basin,” a large open area with an indoor slide where students play and exercise; and “The Nest,” a unique breakout space featuring raised netting that imitates a nest for self-motivated learning.
