As Brookline’s largest elementary school, the Coolidge Corner School serves more than 1,000 students at an important junction of the town’s commercial district and a residential neighborhood. Facing rising enrollment and severe overcrowding, the school presented the design team with the challenge of creating a closer sense of community for students while providing flexibility for the population’s continued growth.
Sited behind the historic Devotion House, the oldest portion of the school was constructed in 1913, with two additions in the 1950s and 1970s. HMFH’s design included renovations to the 1913 building, plus two new academic wings to flank the historic building and frame Devotion House. This H-shaped plan, which supports the town’s educational philosophy, calls for three grade-level neighborhoods. The plan depends on adjacencies for communication, collaboration, flexible grouping and teaming. The building and site design provide varied environments that allow for student agency in how they learn, socialize, and play.
With a projected Energy Use Intensity of 23.3 kBtu/square foot/year, the Coolidge Corner School is distinguished as one of the most energy-efficient public schools in the Commonwealth.
