Concordia University Wisconsin, Chemnitz Residence Hall

Named after Martin Chemnitz, a Lutheran theologian, Concordia’s new 274-bed residence hall overlooking Lake Michigan was completed from design to occupancy in 10 months and was constructed for less than the 2012 national average.

With a growing enrollment, Concordia University needed to construct a new residence hall on campus to relieve existing conditions and house an expected 100 freshman for the fall semester. The project fit within an existing courtyard and integrated with the current residential zone. An older hall will be razed for a future 180-bed expansion.

Based upon an accelerated schedule, a zoning height limitation, and the limits of winter conditions it was determined that the best way to construct the hall was a post-tension concrete floor system with a high-performance exterior shell.

The interior provided 10 independent wings of 28 beds each with independent lounges for flexible housing. A central community core provides activity spaces and fitness centers on alternate levels. The lower level includes classrooms and lecture halls supporting the academic needs of a growing student population.
