The original Carman Lounge had its inherent qualities, including a dramatic terrazzo stair entry, large windows and high ceilings; however, the space has served its time and suffered from a severe lack of life. Natural light was compromised because of color-absorbent built-in furniture. The kitchen was isolated and uninviting.

The architect has installed a lush green “living column,” with built-in living plants, at the main entry. The column is a perfect location for the green wall, for its high visibility from the outside street level, and for the way in which it laces a connection between the first floor and basement entry.

Circular modular couch pieces were used to create a comfortable social waiting area. There are three distinct areas: typical lounge and cafe area, performance/lecture/open mike layout, and small rehearsal layout. The kitchen has new, elongated windows to the lounge, allowing for daylight and beautiful views of the living wall.

The overall design consists of the green-friendly material, low-VOC painting, cradle-to-cradle carpeting, LED lighting and a CAL 133 fire rating.
