College of DuPage, Berg Instructional Center and Student Services Center Renovation and Expansion
Glen Ellyn, Illinois
Constructed in 1970, the Berg Instructional Center (BIC) needed to be upgraded significantly. This large-scale renovation and expansion provided new floor layouts; interiors; furniture; new electrical, lighting and technological systems; and upgraded mechanical systems.
As the main hub of the college’s teaching and learning, the BIC provides more than 100 classrooms, laboratories, and faculty and departmental offices. In addition to renovating the BIC’s 477,000-square-foot interior, a new energy-efficient exterior wall was installed, incorporating extensive additional high-efficiency glazing, infusing the interiors with natural light. In addition to the BIC renovation, a new, 85,000-square-foot Student Services Center (SSC) was designed to connect the BIC and adjacent Student Resource Center, providing a new front door to the college. It has one-stop student services, a new boardroom, meeting rooms, coffee shop, study space and large student commons spaces.
A sustainable design approach targeted LEED silver certification and has incorporated significant energy-reduction strategies, including enhanced insulation and glazing, LED lighting, occupancy lighting controls and daylight illumination controls. The BIC remained in operation during construction over a three-year period.
"An impressive transformation of space. Great daylighted spaces. Excellent scale with variety and flexibility."–2012 jury
