In the 1930s, Eby Fieldhouse was constructed at the north end of the campus quad. In the 1970s, a natatorium was added to the east, and later Clark Racquet Center was built across College Drive. Through this current project, Coe College set out to transform its existing athletic and recreation buildings by maximizing this existing inventory of facilities.
At the start of the project, Coe College and the design team set the vision to provide athletic and recreation facilities that rivaled those of Coe’s competitors. Three primary goals followed the vision: provide athletes with high-quality locker rooms; increase the amount of court space for practices and intramurals; and make better use of existing buildings.
The addition provides a modern weight room and fitness facilities for students and athletes, a performance court, and a wrestling suite. It freed up space in the existing buildings, which were renovated to house additional intramural court space and updated locker rooms. Finally, it ties the existing facilities together by wrapping around them, creating a new image for Coe College’s athletic and recreation programs.
