The master plan for the Chula Vista High School campus in San Diego County masterfully weaves the classicism of their Greek Spartan mascot into a contemporary interpretation of the Classical Greek orders. The new 750-seat Performing Arts Center and library creatively reflect on the past while projecting into the future for the next generations of students at Chula Vista High School.

The new buildings establish a sense of modern elegance while addressing functional issues such as maintenance and durability, all within a sustainable context. The two new building designs combine concrete masonry units with glass curtainwalls to create a dynamic tension between the solid and the transparent building forms that house the different functions. The use of pilasters, lintels and cornices make reference to Greek neoclassical architecture, paying homage to the Spartan mascot.

To help overcome the challenge of a tight budget, the architect spearheaded the process of securing $3.3 million in Career Technical Education and High Performance Initiative grants. Both the performing arts center and library are seeking LEED platinum certification.
