Rooted in the values of conservative
Judaism, Chicagoland Jewish High School (CJHS) is a college-preparatory day school that offers a rigorous dual curriculum focusing on balancing the intellectual, moral and spiritual development of its students.
CJHS was started in 2004 using an existing synagogue’s classrooms supplemented with modular classrooms. Anticipating a maximum enrollment of 400 students within the next decade, the CJHS leadership decided to take measures to accommodate its growing student population, which led to the decision to relocate the school. In 2008, CJHS graduated its first class of 30 seniors from the new building.
Reinforcing the importance of the spiritual development of its students, the sanctuary serves as the heart of the building. In addition to serving as a space for daily prayer, it was designed to support other activities while maintaining the integrity of its sacred nature. Complementing academic spaces, the entry and main corridor emphasize “spaces in between,” serving as places for socialization, thoughts and prayers. The incorporation of materials such as wood and metal symbolize cultural and religious philosophy.
