Chase Street Elementary School
Athens, Georgia
Chase Street School is a landmark in the Athens community. Situated in the historic Boulevard area, the school was built in 1922. The campus, rich in history, has been renovated and expanded to meet the needs of today’s students and teachers.
Before beginning the much-needed update, the design team was challenged to tie the new construction with the original school while maintaining play areas large enough to support the student population. Designers renovated the existing building while maintaining the architectural significance and building details familiar to the community.
The renovated space houses the administrative staff and community-outreach events. An addition was designed to match the scale of the original building and surrounding neighborhood. The addition includes the core building, which houses the media center, cafeteria and gymnasium. This central space is positioned between two classroom wings. Elevations for each of the 12-classroom wings architecturally replicate familiar details from the 86-year-old campus, offering the best of old and new.
