Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center, John H. Boner Community Center, Youth Education Town
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center was borne of a community-based quality-of-life initiative of the John H. Boner Center and was created in partnership with the NFL’s Youth Education Town (YET) program. NFL’s YET gift was tied to Indianapolis’ hosting of the 2012 Super Bowl.
Situated on the Indianapolis Public School (IPS) Corporation’s Arsenal Technical High school campus, the facility is used by IPS students and the greater Near Eastside community. The Legacy Center offers comprehensive and holistically considered fitness programs, as well as wellness and academic education. In addition to its fully equipped fitness facilities, it includes classrooms, a community garden and greenhouse, teaching kitchen, art studio and media-production facility.
The architect provided interior design and environmental graphics design services. High-quality materials and finishes lend the center a private club, rather than institutional, feel. The color scheme is neutral and offset by accents, derived from the YET brand colors, that activate the spaces. Large-scale graphics playing on sports themes not only enliven the rooms, but also serve as branding and wayfinding devices.
