Charlestown High School, Addition and Renovation
Charlestown, Indiana
The architect collaborated with Greater Clark County School Corporation’s administration and the Charlestown community to develop a growth strategy for the existing high school and site, accommodating their needs for years to come.
The challenge was to replace 90 percent of the existing building; expand the school’s parking and support areas to accommodate an increased capacity from 650 students to 900 students; and augment the athletic facilities to meet Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) standards—all while keeping the school operational during construction. In response to this challenge, the architect created a multi-phased approach that innovatively combined new construction with renovation of the existing facility.
The addition included two new multi-story classroom wings with a media center and cafeteria, new athletic complex, new student dropoff, and new main entry with support functions. A major component is a 3,000-seat sunken gymnasium with a suspended scoreboard and sound system, creating a collegiate atmosphere. The renovation updated about 72,000 square feet and included converting the auxiliary gym and locker room area into a technical-education department and additional instruction/support spaces.
