Chalmette High School, Lacoste Ninth Grade Campus, Education Building and Fieldhouse
Chalmette, Louisiana
To recover from complete devastation after Hurricane Katrina, the Lacoste Ninth Grade Campus of Chalmette High School project began with the demolition of almost 70,000 square feet of existing space. The new campus was rebuilt as a state-of-the-art education facility.
The project included a 57,000- square-foot, three-story, reinforced concrete-framed education building that will be capable of withstanding future storms and flooding. The mechanical and electrical systems were designed to integrate energy efficiency and sustainability throughout the campus.
Instructional spaces in the new education building were designed exclusively for ninth-grade-level students and include 18 classrooms, three science labs, three computer labs and a courtyard for outdoor dining. Also included was an attached 48,000-square-foot fieldhouse with a gym, wrestling, fitness area, and a competition swimming pool that will be shared by all grade levels of the high school, as well as community groups.
The facility is linked to the main Chalmette High School campus across the street by means of an enclosed overhead pedestrian bridge.
