Centenary College, David and Carol Lackland Center

Centenary College, situated in Hackettstown, N.J., challenged the architect to create an atmosphere comfortable for students, yet suited for the formal character of the performing-arts center. The resulting Lackland Center features a grand public entrance for the performing-arts center; a secondary entrance faces the campus core for student dining and academics.

A student center, performing-arts center, educational building and conference facility, the Lackland Center marks a new southern gateway for Centenary College. The Lackland Center features the 500-seat Sitnik Theater, Edith Bolte Kutz ’42 Theater, 50-seat private dining room and college boardroom. It offers students and equity actors full support spaces, including a dance studio, dressing rooms and scene shop.

In addition to classes and performances, students benefit from the new 450-seat student dining area, which is accessed easily from the campus-side entry. The Lackland Center also houses the campus radio station, TV studio, editing rooms and music library, together with classrooms and the Department of Communication, and faculty offices.

The Lackland Center is a hub for campus and community use, successfully blending a variety of functions into a single, vibrant facility.
