Catoctin High School is in rural Frederick County, Md., one hour north of Washington, D.C. The project increased the size of the building from 127,000 to 179,500 square feet for a student enrollment expected to rise to 1,200 by 2002. In addition to a new gymnasium and renovation of existing physical-education spaces, the project included significant classroom, choral and band, media center, and administrative additions and renovations.
The existing gymnasium was inadequate in terms of space between the court and the walls, seating capacity, ceiling height and locker rooms. A new gymnasium and varsity locker rooms were designed with a new main entrance and corridor. It serves as both lobby and hallway, dividing and providing access to both gyms.
The existing gymnasium and locker rooms were renovated for non-varsity use. A weight-room was configured from existing space adjacent to the renovated gymnasium.
