Case Western Reserve University, Kelvin Smith Digital Multimedia Library

Existing space on the first floor of the Kelvin Smith library at Case Western Reserve University was converted into a 3,120-square-foot, state-of-the-art digital multimedia library.
The design team worked with the digital imaging and language departments to address storage and housing design challenges associated with high-tech computers and equipment, audiovisual components and mainframe servers. A great deal of time and attention was given to concealing and managing wire and cabling. Other design challenges included size limitations and integrating several functions from various departments into one cohesive space.
Lighting and acoustical canopy design elements were introduced to provide adequate task lighting and soften the monumental existing space. Custom casework was designed to house computer equipment, providing greater efficiency and functionality for the library staff. Furniture, material and color selections complement the contemporary look of the space.
Half-walls visually separate specific areas of interest without breaking the space into individual rooms. This design not only creates an open and spacious feel, but also improves the overall operation of the library.
