Carroll Smith Elementary School, located in Osceola, Ark., was completed in the Summer of 2012. This 71,290-square-foot building was designed for 550 students and includes a gymnasium, a state-of-the-art dining facility, and music, art, and media rooms. After originally considering constructing the school out of concrete block or steel, the project team selected wood, thus reducing both the need for deep foundations and the cost of the structural system. Using wood for the walls, floor and roof deck saved approximately $10 per square foot, as well as provided the project with design flexibility.

The project was designed to be two stories due to the given site constraints of the existing middle school already established on the site. The school was also divided into two distinct zones. The extracurricular activity areas (gym, music room, art room, and cafeteria) are located on the south end of the school while all of the classrooms are located on the north end to isolate any noise that may act as a distraction to the students.
