Carrboro High School
Carrboro, North Carolina
Serving as a model of sensible energy use, environmental protection and community stewardship, Carrboro High School places a gentle footprint on North Carolina’s Orange County. The building was designed according to Chapel Hill—Carrboro City Schools’ “High Performance Building Design Criteria” policy, which emphasizes energy conservation, water reduction, high-efficiency lighting and healthful indoor air quality.
The result is not only a state-of-the-art green facility, but also a school that is comfortable for students and staff, and aesthetically in sync with the architectural character of the town of Carrboro.
Sustainable highlights: three 35,000-gallon cisterns collect filtered rainwater for toilets; retention ponds catch overflow for landscape watering; classrooms, the gymnasium, media center and cafe/commons boast large windows to harvest daylight; fluorescent lights supplement daylight on rainy days and nights; and light and occupancy sensors turn lights on and off automatically.
Helping to keep Carrboro cool and the surrounding vegetation healthy, the school’s roof incorporates an Energy Star-compliant, highly reflective membrane. Solar energy preheats water; photovoltaic panels convert light into electricity for mechanical room motors. Building materials were obtained from regional manufacturers, and more than 90 percent of the construction was recycled.
Carrboro is the first high school in North Carolina to receive a LEED silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
