Carbondale Community High School
Carbondale, Illinois
The new high school links to an existing high school, which was formerly the freshman campus. Anticipating planned expansion, providing effective access for community use and creating a dynamic environment infused by natural light drove the plan. The new auditorium, learning center and cafeteria are situated at a new main entrance at the juncture of the existing and new circulation spines, enabling secure and accessible use by high school and community members.
Creativity and community participation distinguished this project:
-The city and school district, business community, park district and government collaborated to pass a sales-tax increase to help pay for construction.
-A variety of public and not-for-profit service providers participated in programming to ensure that the school could accommodate some or all of their activities, thereby providing value to all constituencies throughout the community.
