The Tracey F. Smith Hall of Nursing and Health Sciences echoes the modern, professional identity of Campbell’s medical programs and the nearby Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine while embodying the university’s traditional, faith-based values. The building houses programs for future health care professionals including nurses, physical therapists, and other medical specialists studying the science of health and healing. Patterns throughout the building are based on human form (the primary focus of any program in the building), the Holy Trinity (inherent to Campbell’s faith-based founding), and the balance of Mind, Body and Spirit—a recurring theme throughout the university.
A world map in the Student Commons highlights everywhere Campbell’s impact has reached—locations of mission trips, study trips abroad, and sister schools. It encourages students to think beyond the campus and provokes a sense of pride as students realize the global reach of the university.
The building is conceived as a pure glass box enfolded by a highly articulated, well-crafted masonry veil. The appearance from the exterior is one of solidity and permanence.
