California Baptist University, JoAnn Hawkins Music Building
Riverside, California
The training of highly skilled musicians has been an essential part of California Baptist University’s mission to strengthen churches and promote Christian artistic expression since the school’s founding in 1950. Rapid student population growth made the construction of a modern, dedicated facility for CBU’s Collinsworth School of Music a necessity.
This state-of-the-art facility is built from the ground up to maximize music instruction, production and recording. Acoustical architect Vincent van Haaff contributed sound-engineering expertise to the design of each room. As a result, the building’s production, recording and training rooms are almost completely soundproof.
The 33,000-square-foot building also contains a wealth of technology and equipment. It features two large recording studios with a central control room that houses a digital mixing system; four large rehearsal rooms; four classrooms equipped with smartboards; 25 soundproofed practice rooms; 16 faculty offices; 51 grand pianos; and high-speed wireless and fiber-optic wired networks with storage servers.
“The technology coupled with spacious learning areas inspires students to achieve their artistic best.”–2006 jury
