Caledonia High School is organized into three separate classical centers of education—mind, body and soul—which are represented by the departments of academics, athletics and arts. Each center is accessed from a single circulatory spine. The spine is warped, providing the centers with focal vistas toward an existing grove of trees. The exterior experience is immediately accessible from the cafeteria, natural sciences and the performing-arts center (PAC) lobby.
The programmatic charge: develop a facility that celebrates classical educational components, and arrange the facility to enhance acoustical control and provide each area with its own identity.
The solution is organized into a parti of three elements housing the academics, athletics and arts. The soul “center” consists of a PAC, which was organized to promote integration of industrial arts, graphic arts and music at the auditorium.
The auditorium has 1,000 programmed seats, a balcony and reserved boxes.
Masonry finishes augment the classical concept. The proscenium is framed with oversized stone columns.
The stage is rigged with a full-fly loft and grid. A control room, follow spot room and catwalks distribute premium sound and lighting systems for a complete theatrical performance.
The acoustical experience is enhanced with high-volume/low-velocity air returned at the seating floor. It is one of the few in the state to have a high-efficiency geothermal system.
