The historic Bruce-Monroe Elementary School at Park View was constructed in 1916 with two academic wings added in 1931. The structure is built of brick with limestone ornamentation through decorative quoins, window and door trim, and crenellation along the parapet.

Renovation efforts maintained the integrity of Bruce-Monroe’s historic context, while also providing a state-of-the-art learning environment for the school and community.

Highlights include:

• New, dynamic welcome center: Delivers a clear path upon entry, introducing a seamless connection to the reception area.

• Centrally located state-of-the-art Media Center: Serves as Bruce-Monroe’s focal point and an assembly space for the community, emphasizing natural light via skylights.

• Reorganization of classrooms: Groups students by grade, granting a more conducive environment for learning.

• Accessible site and building: Affords an accessible facility through re-grading, stone walls, and a ramp while preserving the historic entrance, despite considerable challenges at project inception due to the elevated building site.

• Reconfiguration of the site: Provides additional parking and a designated loading area, thereby separating the vehicular and play areas and increasing safety.
