Brown Middle School
Forney, Texas
Brown Middle School in the fast-growing Forney Independent School District, just east of Dallas, is Forney’s second middle school but its first new middle school in many years. The district’s other middle school has been renovated to bring it into parity with Brown.
Brown was designed with the community in mind. The atrium just inside the front entry connects directly to the cafeteria and gym, which are central to the plan and serve as pre-function gathering places for the entire building, for students as well as after-hours community events. The simple circulation diagram not only is economical in minimizing the square footage of the footprint and roofing, but also is navigated easily. The efficient plan allows extra-wide corridors, which have reduced disruption in the passing periods and provide a safer, more secure building.
The brick colors were inspired by nearby public and amenity buildings that were built of local orange-red stone. More than 85 percent of the roof is standing-seam metal. The school is equipped with fiber optics, wireless access and laptops. Forney ISD also has instituted an e-textbook program.
